Alexander was arrested by his brother James III Stewart king of Scotland in 1479 but managed to escape to France. On 4 October 1479 his estates and titles were declared forfeit. In 1482 he styled himself King of Scotland and made a treaty with Edward IV King of England, but soon after reconciled with his brother. Later in 1482 Alexander was restored to his titles and estates, but they were forfeit again the next year when he renewed his treaty with the English. He invaded Scotland, fighting in the Battle of Lochmaben on 22 July 1484, but was defeated and fled again to France.

James was a prisoner in the Tower of London when he learned of his father's death and his own succession to the crown of Scotland. The pirates who had captured him on his way to France in 1406 had turned him over to the English king Henry IV. James did not return to Scotland to take the throne until he was released on 4 April 1424. Scotland had been governed by his uncle Robert Duke of Albany until 1420, and then by Robert's son Murdoch. James had Murdoch and two of his relatives killed outside Stirling Castle on 25 May 1425.
