Uhtred was co-ruler of Galloway along with his brother Gilbert. During the revolt against the Normans which followed the disastrous invasion of Northumbria during which King William I was captured, Gilbert mutilated, blinded, castrated, and killed Uhtred. This is probably the motivation for Uhtred’s son Roland’s attempt to take the lordship of Galloway after Gilbert’s death.
